NOTES AND NEWS Week of September 27th, 2009
THE FLOWERS on the Lord’s altar today were given by Bill and Lisa Vohwinkle in thanksgiving for their 9th wedding anniversary. Thank you! THE BULLETINS for our weekend worship services were given by Marlene Grossert. Thank you! JOIN US FOR BIBLE CLASS ON 1 & 2 PETER! In Peter’s epistles he instructs Christ’s sheep how to deal with challenges facing the early Christian church—challenges that we also face today. Class is held in the Welcome Center on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. and on Mondays after our worship service. Hope to see you there! BIBLE INFORMATION CLASS WILL BEGIN ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1 AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3. This class is designed to cover the main truths of God’s Word. Those who complete the class and want to join our congregation will be received through the rite of Adult Confirmation. This class is also an excellent way for our current members to refresh their knowledge of God’s Word. The class will be held in the Welcome Center on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. The same class is taught at these two different times each week to allow you to choose which time works better for you. ST. JOHN’S LADIES AID will meet at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, in the Welcome Center. We will be hosting St. Jacobi Ladies’ Aid for lunch and a Special Program “Time Out to Laugh.” Remember to bring your sandwich. All ladies of the congregation are welcome. PICK UP SCRIP TODAY! Order forms for scrip are available in the brochure holder located in the church entry and in the Welcome Center. Orders are placed on the first and third Sunday/Monday of each month. Orders can be picked up on the second and fourth Sunday/Monday of each month. For more info on our Scrip program, please visit our website at www.stjohnsmilw.org/scrip/htm. Please continue to support St. John’s with your Scrip orders. If you have any questions, please call Cindy Elleseg at 541.3205. SOME CDS AND DVDS OF OUR PAST WORSHIP SERVICES are available in the Welcome Center. They are located in the bottom left drawer of the kiosk. Feel free to help yourselves. THE OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER GREETERS SCHEDULE is available in the church narthex. SUNDAY SCHOOL PARENTS AND CHILDREN are reminded to meet in church today at 9:15 until 10:15 a.m. for Parents Day. We will have a devotion with Pastor Goldschmidt, some singing, a short video, and a short tour of the new Welcome Center with refreshments. (Please introduce yourself to Pastor Goldschmidt if you have not already done so.) Also, the final score from the softball game 2 weeks ago was team 2; 24 and team 1; 23. Lots of fun! VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO HELP WITH SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE! We need your help if we’re going to continue serving coffee on Sunday mornings. Two options are available: set up before the early service or clean up after the late service. If you’re an early riser, you can help brew coffee at 7:15 a.m. so that we have coffee ready for those who come to our first service. Clean-up after the second service takes about twenty minutes. Please sign up at the kiosk in the Welcome Center for the dates that work for you. For more information, please contact Sandy Bartsch at 414.545.8651. THE ST. JOHN’S WAUWATOSA Christian Education Society cordially invites our brothers and sisters in Christ to join us for our annual Fall Festival on Sunday, October 11, from 2:30-7:00 p.m. in our school gymnasium. This year’s theme is “Totally 80’s!” and will feature live family-friendly music, a costume contest for best individual and best group costume and an afternoon of fellowship and fun. Admission is FREE! Please call 414.258.4214 for more information. ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH will be hosting Life Line Screening on November 18th in the Welcome Center. Four different health screenings will be offered for people 40-years-old and older. The screenings are performed using Doppler color flow ultrasound systems and include the following: 1). A Carotid Artery Screening –visualizes the build up of plaque in the carotid arteries, which leads to stroke. 2). An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) test – looks for an enlargement in the abdominal aorta that could lead to a ruptured aortic artery. The vast majority of people who have an aneurysm have no symptoms; 3). An Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) – screens for peripheral arterial disease in the lower extremities. 4). And a test for Atrial Fibrillation, which tests for a dangerous type of irregular heart beat. 5). Many of you visit your Doctor on a regular basis and are probably thinking, if I needed these tests my Doctor would order them for me. Physicians will NOT typically order these tests unless you are showing symptoms or warning signs of the disease and unfortunately as it relates to stroke, about 50% of the cases have no signs or symptoms. You must pre-register by calling 1-800-324-1851. The cost for the tests is $149, a savings of $51 off the normal package price. These screenings are completely painless, non-invasive, and require ten minutes or less each to complete. Watch for more information in upcoming bulletins or call 1-800-324-1851. Please reference this code when calling: HSC-6509. PREGNANCY COUNSELING CENTER. Can you help with baby gifts? Because of the Loving Moms we are seeing more new babies. We need to keep ready-to-give presents on hand for moms who bring in their newborns. This is another chance for us to talk to moms about having their babies baptized and bringing them up to know Jesus. Christian baby and toddler books are the perfect gift for new moms when talking to them about Christian parenting. We can use any combination of books and other baby things, which we will package along with appropriate literature. New items for the wish list include: Christian baby books/Bibles, baby items (toys, bibs, etc) especially those with Christian messages, gift bags, wrap and ribbon. Materials for teaching children about Jesus while their moms are in a session (used items in good condition are fine.) such as Bible story books or Christian dvds, children’s books Bible puppets, action figures, Bible story coloring/activity/sticker books, crayons. Please sponsor Gene Huth in the Life-A-Thon! Enter your pledge in the Welcome Center. Today is the last day. Questions? Call Gene Huth 453.1350.
