By purchasing Script you are able to help both our Church and School by purchasing exactly
what you normally purchase without spending a penny more. Simply buy Scrip for the stores and places you
normally patronize and use your Scrip to pay for your purchase.
For every Scrip purchase you make, you receive the full value of Scrip purchase. For example, if you
purchase a $25 Barnes and Noble Scrip gift card, you receive its full $25 value. In other words, for every dollar
you spend on Scrip, you receive that amount back in a gift card or gift certificate.
St. Johns makes money because each Scrip card vendor returns a portion of the Scrip purchase amount back to
St. Johns. Barnes and Noble returns 9% of the purchase amount. The $25 Barnes and Noble Scrip gift card purchase would
result in $2.25 returned to St. John's by Barnes and Noble. The percentage returned varies by vendor. See the
Scrip Vendor List for a complete listing of vendors and the percentages they return. Kohl's Department stores
will even let you pay off your credit card balance with Script.
The Great
Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other
non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery
stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is
purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a
substantial discount. The discount remains with St. Johns, while the members
receive the scrip for full face value. Discounts vary by vendor
from two to fifteen percent, or more.
The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is
simple: families generate revenue through purchases they would make
anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be
purchased with scrip. An organization of 150 families easily spends
between one and two million dollars per year on food, clothing and other
essentials. If these families use scrip for these purchases, they can
raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for their organization
--without spending an additional penny.
